The purpose of this project is to learn more about what parents of young children in Oregon are experiencing, what services and support they are receiving, and to provide parenting help through a smartphone-based program with encouragement from a coach. Our ultimate goal is to help children grow up to be healthy, successful adults.

Do I qualify to participate?

To participate, parents must:

  • Be the parent or legal guardian of a child between the ages of 18 months and 5 years old and live with the child at least 50% of the time.

  • Have a smartphone with text messaging capability.

  • Be willing to complete phone interviews and use a smartphone-based parenting program.

  • Be experiencing stressors associated with raising young children.

What will be asked of me if I choose to participate?

  • Complete surveys over the phone:

    • You will be asked to complete four private phone interviews with project staff spread across 1 year. Each survey takes around 1-2 hours to complete. For each survey you complete, you are paid $75.

    • Quick Completion Bonus: You will be compensated an additional $25 for completing your interviews/surveys within 2 weeks of being received.

  • Use the smartphone-based parenting program:

    • You will be invited to use the Family Check-Up (FCU) Online program to think about your parenting and practice new skills. You can expect to participate in modules on wellness and self-care, positive parenting, and rules and limit setting.

  • Some families will receive support from a Coach:

    • Half of the families in the project will be randomly selected to receive support through phone calls, text, or Zoom from a coach who is a trained early childhood provider. This coach will help you apply what you learn in the FCU Online in your day-to-day life.

  • Families have the opportunity to opt in to using an additional app:

    • You have the option to participate in an additional part of the project (using a second app) to earn an extra $25. If you are interested in learning more, please ask our staff for more information!
